My name is Jobita Mendoza and I am currently student teaching Kindergarten Spanish Immersion at Markham Elementary School in Vacaville. The class has 29 students; 13 English only and 16 Native Spanish speakers. My students are wonderful and usually follow directions if modeled clearly. There are about 4 students that are constantly chatting and making funny noises, but other than that the day goes by quickly. I have a lot of fun!
Wow! 29 kindergartners! Is there only one full time teacher? The number of students in classrooms today is alarming...how can we expect our students to do well when we have student to teacher ratios like this? :-/ I'm sure you have really learned how to multitask this year!
ReplyDelete29 kindergarteners is kind of nuts, I agree. But I love kindergarteners. Their little brains are going a million miles a minute just beginning to grasp the world beyond their immediate surroundings--the start of abstract thought! And to see the literate world open up for them as they start to read is just amazing. The main thing that makes me sad about having 29 of them in one room is not the behavioral chaos (although I'm sure there's a lot of that), but that you have so little opportunity to really talk in-depth with each of them as thinking individuals.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly have a lot of kindergartners. I am glad that other than the 4 chatty students, the days go by fast. You seem to have a great class! Does your kindergartners attend full time at school?
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought I had a lot of kindergarteners at 25... I'm glad you have a lot of fun in your class. I know kindergarteners can be So fun! And they say the craziest things sometimes... I keep thinking I should write the things they say down and write a book!
ReplyDeleteYou must be very patient in dealing with kindergartners. I am interested in how the model works in an immersion classroom and how you have to almost have two hats on at all time and are able to switch back and forth. Very challenging I would assume. Impressed to handle the size and different languages to be spoken as well.
